Breckenridge is a town located in Summit County, Colorado. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,408. It is the county seat of Summit County. Breckenridge is also a popular ski resort during the winter months, servicing multi-difficulty ski slopes on the Rocky Mountains. In the summer, the town turns into an outdoor lover's paradise with great hiking trails, beautiful wildflowers to see, fly-fishing in the Blue River, and nearby Lake Dillon for boating.

The name Breckenridge

Early in its history, the town wanted a post office. The townspeople decided to name their town after the United States' Vice President at the time, John C. Breckinridge. This worked, and Breckinridge got a post office. When civil war broke out in 1861 Breckinridge sided with the Confederates and pro-Union citizens of Breckinridge wanted to change the name. The i was changed to an e, and it has been Breckenridge ever since.

Breckenridge Geography

Breckenridge is located at 39°29'11" North, 106°2'37" West (39.486445, -106.043516).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 12.8 km2 (4.9 mi2). 12.8 km2 (4.9 mi2) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

The elevation of Breckenridge is 9,600 feet (above sea level).

Breckenridge Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 2,408 people, 1,081 households, and 380 families residing in the town. The population density is 187.8/km2 (486.4/mi2). There are 4,270 housing units at an average density of 333.1/km2 (862.6/mi2). The racial makeup of the town is 95.56% White, 0.37% African American, 0.33% Native American, 1.04% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.12% from other races, and 1.54% from two or more races. 5.44% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,081 households out of which 13.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 27.9% are married couples living together, 4.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 64.8% are non-families. 28.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 0.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.16 and the average family size is 2.61.

In the town the population is spread out with 11.1% under the age of 18, 22.8% from 18 to 24, 45.3% from 25 to 44, 18.7% from 45 to 64, and 2.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 160.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 164.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $43,938, and the median income for a family is $52,212. Males have a median income of $29,571 versus $27,917 for females. The per capita income for the town is $29,675. 8.8% of the population and 5.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 1.7% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
