More About Dubach

Map of Dubach

MAP GOES HERE

Dubach is a town located in Lincoln Parish, Louisiana. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 800 (see below for recount information). Dubach High School, located centrally in the town, is noted for fielding very good athletic teams in basketball- routinely beating teams from much larger towns and cities. In fall 2005, Dubach voters defeated a bond issue that would have funded much-needed renovations to Hico Elementary and Dubach High. Despite a well-spoken campaign by high school principal Donna Doss, voters killed the issue by a wide margin. Local media speculated that the economic effects of Hurricaine Katrina may have swayed voters to err on the side of caution with regards to new taxation.

Dubach Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 800 people, 341 households, and 240 families residing in the town. However, following a successful recount of the census, led by La. Tech professor Dr. Stokely, the population was shown to be over 1000. It is widely held that the first count came in low due to the rural nature of the town and the possible reticence of some people to be counted. The recount was important as it allowed Dubach to continue to be considered a town, instead of a village. Villages receive fewer funds from state and federal development programs, so the retention of 'town' nomenclature wasn't trivial. The population density is 217.5/km2 (561.6/mi2). There are 390 housing units at an average density of 106.0/km2 (273.8/mi2). The racial makeup of the town is 64.62% White, 34.88% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races, and 0.12% from two or more races. 1.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 341 households out of which 29.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.7% are married couples living together, 22.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.6% are non-families. 27.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.83.

In the town the population is spread out with 24.9% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 19.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 75.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 72.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $24,531, and the median income for a family is $30,000. Males have a median income of $32,353 versus $16,538 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,306. 20.2% of the population and 17.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 30.5% of those under the age of 18 and 16.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

The town is known as the "Dogtrot Capital of the World" as many dogtrot homes are nearby. The Autrey house (and museum) just west of town is the oldest home in the area and is an excellent example of the early and rare form of frontier architecture.

Dubach is also home to an annual Chuckwagon race, and a town festival.

Fishing and hunting in the area are among the best in the south. The area woods teem with wildlife, including: squirrel, deer, bobcat, raccoons- and even bear and panther. Fishing is world class on Bayou D'Arbonne.
