Barton is a town located in Allegany County, Maryland. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 478.

Barton History

The Reverend William Shaw, a Methodist minister settled on the site of Barton in 1794. His son, William Shaw Jr. laid out the town in 1853, naming it for his father's hometown, Barton-upon-Humber, England.

Barton is located at 39°31'54" North, 79°1'1" West (39.531693, -79.017077).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²). 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Barton Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 478 people, 200 households, and 142 families residing in the town. The population density is 838.9/km² (2,129.8/mi²). There are 233 housing units at an average density of 408.9/km² (1,038.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 99.58% White, 0.42% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 200 households out of which 28.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.5% are married couples living together, 11.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.0% are non-families. 27.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 24.5% from 45 to 64, and 18.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 98.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $30,104, and the median income for a family is $33,333. Males have a median income of $29,844 versus $14,196 for females. The per capita income for the town is $14,453. 14.4% of the population and 13.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 32.7% of those under the age of 18 and 8.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
