Federalsburg is a town located in Caroline County, Maryland. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,620. The ZIP Code is 21632. The primary phone exchange is 754 and the area code is 410.

Claims to fame include a Federalist Party meeting in the early 1800s that gave the town its name and also being host to an Eastern Shore Baseball League minor league team -- the Athletics -- before World War II.

The town is the home of former major league baseball player Robert "Ducky" Detweiler.

Federalsburg Geography

Federalsburg is located at 38°41'28" North, 75°46'24" West (38.691126, -75.773296).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 5.2 km2 (2.0 mi2). 5.1 km2 (2.0 mi2) of it is land and 0.1 km2 (0.1 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 2.49% water.

Federalsburg Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 2,620 people, 1,045 households, and 714 families residing in the town. The population density is 518.8/km2 (1,341.5/mi2). There are 1,130 housing units at an average density of 223.7/km2 (578.6/mi2). The racial makeup of the town is 58.93% White, 36.83% African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.65% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races, and 2.86% from two or more races. 1.11% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,045 households out of which 37.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.4% are married couples living together, 25.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.6% are non-families. 27.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 2.97.

In the town the population is spread out with 30.8% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 81.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 74.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $24,266, and the median income for a family is $32,059. Males have a median income of $28,438 versus $21,296 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,878. 25.3% of the population and 21.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 35.2% of those under the age of 18 and 18.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
