Flora Geography
Flora is located at 32°32'35" North, 90°18'43" West (32.543056, -90.311843).According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 8.8 km2 (3.4 mi2). 8.8 km2 (3.4 mi2) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
Flora Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 1,546 people, 575 households, and 416 families residing in the town. The population density is 175.6/km2 (454.2/mi2). There are 606 housing units at an average density of 68.8/km2 (178.0/mi2). The racial makeup of the town is 57.05% White, 42.04% African American, 0.65% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 0.19% from two or more races. 0.32% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.There are 575 households out of which 36.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.7% are married couples living together, 25.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.5% are non-families. 25.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.69 and the average family size is 3.21.
In the town the population is spread out with 29.3% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 30.8% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 10.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 86.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $38,077, and the median income for a family is $41,324. Males have a median income of $31,786 versus $22,176 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,075. 25.3% of the population and 18.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 44.4% of those under the age of 18 and 10.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
Recent History
In April of 2004, radio station WYAB 93.1 FM moved to Flora from nearby Yazoo City.
In June of 2005, Flora had its municipal elections. Charles Scott Greaves defeated challenger Maria Sue Jones for the post of mayor. Mayor Greaves replaced outgoing mayor Jw Richardson, who decided not to run for reelection after holding the post for two terms. Current elected officials include Aldermen Mike Westbrook, Randy Grewe, L.V. Sumler, Les Childress, and Alderman-at-Large Jonathan Bates. The Flora City Clerk is Debbie Ross. The Flora City Attorney is Ronnie Kirk. The Flora Police Chief is Hubert Roberts. Meetings of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen are generally held the second Tuesday evening of each month at 6:45 PM at city hall.
