Auburn History

Auburn was originally incorporated as "Slaughter," named after William Slaughter, who died in an Indian skirmish in 1855. At the time, the main hotel in town was called the "Slaughter House." In 1893, a large group of settlers from Auburn, New York moved to Slaughter, and renamed the town to "Auburn." Due to this history, when Auburn was building its second high school in the mid-1990s, there was a grass-roots effort to name the high school "Slaughter High School," but it was eventually decided that the name would be too politically incorrect, and the High School was named "Auburn-Riverside High School."

Politics

As of the 2004 Presidential election, Auburn consists of 51 precincts in King County and 3 in Pierce County. However, three of the King County precincts and one of the Pierce County precincts cast no votes. An additional one precinct in King County had only 2 voters; one in Pierce County had only 16. Of the 47 precincts in King County with a significant number of voters, 37 voted for Democrat John Kerry. Republican George W. Bush performed best in the southeastern part of the city, around the affluent Lakeland Hills area. His single best performance was the southeasternmost precinct in the King County portion, near the Muckleshoot Indian Reservation. Bush won this precinct, located around Kersey Way Southeast and 53rd Street Southeast, by nearly a 2-to-1 margin, although the neighbouring Reservation voted for Kerry by a margin of about 3-to-1.

With King County and Pierce County portions combined, the following were the 2004 Presidential results.

  • John F. Kerry (Democrat) - 4,522 (54.24%)
  • George W. Bush (Republican) - 3,709 (44.49%)
  • Ralph Nader (Independent) - 60 (0.72%)
  • Other candidates and write-ins - 46 (0.55%)
