Edmonds is a city located in Snohomish County, Washington. Edmonds has a view of the Puget Sound and both the Olympic Mountains and Cascade Range. It was also the birthplace of Ken Jennings, popular winner on the television show, Jeopardy!, and the hometown of Rosalyn Sumners, the Olympic figure skating medalist.

As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 39,515 (40,014 estimated in July 2002).

Based on per capita income, one of the more reliable measures of affluence, Edmonds ranks 37th of 522 areas in the state of Washington to be ranked.

Edmonds was officially incorporated on August 14, 1890.

Edmonds Geography

Edmonds resides at 47°48'28" North, 122°21'36" West (47.807868, -122.360133).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 47.8 km2 (18.4 mi2). 23.1 km2 (8.9 mi2) of it is land and 24.7 km2 (9.5 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 51.68% water.

Edmonds Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 39,515 people, 16,904 households, and 10,818 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,714.3/km2 (4,437.6/mi2). There are 17,508 housing units at an average density of 759.5/km2 (1,966.2/mi2). The racial makeup of the city is 87.73% White, 1.34% African American, 0.80% Native American, 5.56% Asian, 0.26% Pacific Islander, 1.26% from other races, and 3.05% from two or more races. 3.32% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 16,904 households out of which 26.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.0% are married couples living together, 8.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.0% are non-families. 29.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.85.

In the city the population is spread out with 20.6% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 28.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 89.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $53,522, and the median income for a family is $66,126. Males have a median income of $46,226 versus $33,863 for females. The per capita income for the city is $30,076. 4.6% of the population and 2.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.9% of those under the age of 18 and 3.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
